Palm Sunday                       April 9, 2017                              10:15 a.m.

Meditation: “It may well be that the world is denied miracle after miracle and triumph after triumph because we will not bring to Christ what we have and what we are.  If, just as we are, we would lay ourselves on the altar of service of Jesus Christ, there is no saying what Christ could do with us and through us.”                ~ William Barclay

Introit: Palm Sunday Rap

Call To Worship
Come, let us follow Jesus, for Jerusalem is near.
Jesus and his friends are ready to enter the city.
In the air, there is a sense of wonder and mystery,
of the Word being fulfilled.
Jesus enters the city riding a colt and the crowds cry out,
“Hosanna!  Blessed is the one
who comes in the name of the Lord!”

A king is welcomed into Jerusalem,
but did the crowds remember the cross at the edge of the city?

Hymn:  When They Heard That Jesus Was Coming
(solo voice)  Sing hosanna to the chosen one!
(solo voice)  Sing hosanna to the chosen one!
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
sing hosanna to the chosen one!

 Prayer of Approach:
Loving God, on this Palm Sunday
we remember the crowds who shouted
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
We remember those who declared with joy,
“This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”
And yet we know that the road to Jerusalem
is the way to the cross and the tomb.
Be with us now,
as we journey with the Christ, into his Passion,
knowing that it is you who defends both Christ and us.

In Jesus Christ you came, showing us that we achieve

that your goodness may be more fully known
through us and through them.
May the service of all your people, including us,
make the abundance of your love fully known.  Amen

Commissioning and Benediction:
God, we are approaching the end of our Lenten journey,
and difficult days lie ahead for us.
Just now we hear the cries of the crowd,
as they welcome Jesus into the city.
Their cries call us to join in their celebration,
yet we are uneasy.
Before us lie the shadows of the cross.
God, we pray that you walk with us as we journey
through the events of Holy week:
the anger of Jesus, when he confronts those
who turned your house into a den for thieves,
the last meal that Jesus will share with his friends,
where one will betray him,
and one will deny him.
His death on the cross.
God, walk with us through these days,
so when we stand at the foot of the cross,
we will see past it to the wonder of the empty tomb
that renews our faith in your love revealed to us,
through the witness of Christ Jesus,
who shares with us your kingdom to come.  Amen
