We Gather in God’s Name

Introit: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (333)

Call to Worship:
We come to worship;
searching for truth,
we come to pray; to lay our burdens down,
we come to share our gifts;
lifting the fallen,
we come to praise; united by God’s love.
Let us worship the God of truth and love.

Hymn: As We Gather At Your Table (457)

Opening Prayer: Wild God
It seems to us that things would be much easier
if you would just do what we ask, Jesus;
If you were more compliant and co-operative,
more flexible and adaptable,
more open to follow agendas other than your own;

But, frustratingly, you refuse to be tamed, Jesus;
you won’t be domesticated into leaving our brokenness untouched,
No – you prod and provoke,
unafraid of the pain it might cause us,
of the comfort we may have to relinquish.

You are a Wild God, Jesus, and we are afraid of such a God,
but we choose to praise you anyway,
because a domesticated deity,
a tame grace is not what we need;
You are a Wild God, and we praise you that you are,
because any other God would be unworthy of the name.

Anthem: The Gift of Love

We Hear God’s Word

Theme Presentation

Minute for Mission: (Wendy Gallant)

Scripture Reading: I Corinthians 13:1-13 (NT, pg. 175)

(Dori Jensen)

Message: Love Revealed

Prayer: Determined
We praise You, Lord God,
that Your Way is found
not by travelling an exclusive highway,
or in secrets preserved only for some,
but in the open field of love and grace,
where all who choose may come and play.

We praise You, Lord God,
that Your Truth is heard
not only in the words of scholars and authors,
or in brittle, inflexible ideas,
but in honest questions
and difficult conversations,
in the courageous attempts of simple people
to live lives of integrity.

We open ourselves again to Your call,
determined to do what we promise,
to follow Your Way,
to embody Your Truth
to share Your Life.
And to do it all with thanksgiving and praise.

Hymn: Let Us Build a House (MV,1)

We Respond to God

Prayers of Joy and Concern and The Lord’s Prayer

* Doxology: (541)

* Offertory Prayer:
No gift to small,
no gift to big,
no sacrifice too simple,
no sacrifice too great,
when love is at the core,
all gifts are equal,
for we are equally loved by God.
May these gifts reflect
the bounty of God’s grace. Amen

* Hymn: I Come With Joy (477)

*Benediction: Quietly Prophetic
In a cynical and despairing world, O God,
give us a quietly prophetic voice
to proclaim your hope.

In a violent and angry world, O God,
give us a quietly prophetic voice
to proclaim your peace.

In a dismissive and disinterested world, O God,
give us a quietly prophetic voice
to proclaim your compassion.

In a lonely and inhospitable world, O God,
give us a quietly prophetic voice
to proclaim your love.

In a grieving and weeping world, O God,
give us a quietly prophetic voice
to proclaim your joy.

May we be so captivated by your hope, O God,
that we cannot help but to whisper,
to sing, and to enact,
the message of your reign
which is always coming into our world;
And may our quietly prophetic lives,
be channels of your restoring grace
wherever we may go.
